STORIES WORTH TELLING

on the page and in our lives.

Hello! I'm Michael Koehler.

A writer exploring how we orient ourselves through story.

Born in the US and raised in postcolonial Uganda, I grew up a “Third Culture Kid”. Home was everywhere and nowhere, a feeling that followed me into adulthood and became the lifeblood of my creative work. After graduating from NYU Tisch, I worked as a travel videographer and later led Lights Film School, where I mentored thousands of emerging filmmakers globally.

I’ve spent the past decade living nomadically, a way of life that has deeply informed my film and fiction about people caught between worlds. My writing explores questions of belonging, metaphysics, and the spaces between us.

Recent projects include The Dirty Oyster, a Finalist in the Austin Film Festival Script Competition, now in development with Echobend Pictures in LA. My screenwriting has been recognized by The Black List and its Staffing Book, Nantucket Film Festival (Winner), Fantasia Frontières, and others.

I’m currently writing my first novel, a process documented in my publication THE LIGHTHOUSE. Read by over 15,000 people in 140 countries, it offers field notes on cinema, travel, and the day-to-day - reflections on how stories shape us and how we shape them.

I also consult one-on-one with creatives, founders, and other curious humans.

No matter the medium, every important work begins with a story someone is trying to tell.

Have a look at some things I've made:

Selections from my film work:

Feature Film in Development / Award-Winning Screenplay / Short Film DUST Premiere

Selections from THE LIGHTHOUSE:

The Opening Pages of HOUSE OF SNOW / The Search for the Ninth Path / On DUNE: PART TWO

Keep Exploring
